We are now going to have a look at an Oxygen Giving Set. Oxygen Giving Sets well, you will notice them above every bed in a hospital, a dentist has them, anywhere where there is plumbed in oxygen that will use a giving set of this type. The first thing we have is the actual Schrader valve itself which plugs into the wall into a fitment to deliver the oxygen. The next thing is we have a glass file with a ball inside and a gauge. The gauge is litres per minute, and the little ball inside floats on the air to measure the amount of litres per minute that you are giving the patient. There is also regulator at the front which actually controls the amount of flow to regulate the ball going up and down the tube itself. And then at the end is the port that the oxygen pipe fits on to allow the oxygen to go to the patient. So it comes from the plumbing system, into, through the ball and out again through the bottom into the actual mask or nasal cannula or whatever the device is that you are gonna use to put oxygen into your patient.

So, on the hospital ward or in the back of this vehicle where the oxygen is actually plumbed to, you will see on the wall there is an oxygen port. The oxygen port fits into the actual Schrader valve itself and it does so by just pushing. So you put the valve in, push it home and it clicks and locks. It is now fixed, it will not come loose, it is fixed in that position and it is now coupled to the main oxygen supply in the vehicle or actually in the hospital system that you are working in. If we now turn the actual valve on, you will see that the ball starts to float to give us our flow rate that we are gonna give the patient. And in most cardiac arrest will be going at the full ball 15 litres per minute, but if we are just strictly oxygenating into somebody will drop the volume down to possibly two or three litres per minute.

The actual valve here now would be pushed or coupled to the oxygen actual giving set itself, pull the oxygen mask as it is in this case, so now when we turn it on and turn the volume up, you will see that the bag starts to fill because we are now putting oxygen through the system and into the mask itself. Very quickly you will see the bag fills with oxygen. We can now take our finger off and the oxygen, you just fill in the bag, the bag is filling the patient, and the patient is now breathing pure oxygen every time they take a breath. Don't forget that the regulator can be adjusted at any time if your patient starts to improve and their oxygen levels come up, we can lock the volume down. If they get worse, we can push the volume up or we can turn it off completely, take the mask off, which is one use only and disposed off correctly. The unit itself then stays in situ.

However, if we do need to take off the actual giving set itself, the first thing we must do is to turn the oxygen off in the vehicle, release the pressure by opening the valve so there's no pressure in the system, and then we press the circle around the Schrader valve to release. I am actually gonna do it now without taking the pressure off and you will see how you will hear a gush of air on a potentially dangerous situation. It fires the set-out. It can be plugged in with the oxygen turned on but the oxygen should always be turned off and the system drained of pressure before we remove it. It just keeps the system safe, it keeps you safe and stops anybody getting injured.
